Here's a quick synopsis of the Jingle Ball 2013 at Verizon Center. Performers were Jason DeRulo, Fifth Harmony, Robin Thicke, Fallout Boy, Flo Rida, Enrique Iglesias, Paramore, Austin Mahone, and Miley Cyrus
Jason DeRulo
Was okay. I think he is an artist who can generally hit good high pitch notes. When the pitch got high, he just stopped and let the audience fill in. Seemed to me his voice wasn't able to hit the highs so he just left them out. He had some male dancers. They looked like ammeters, maybe chums who he hooked up to share the stage.
Fifth Harmony
Not a powerful enough voice to make a mark. In an arena setting, you need a good beat. With their soft voices and reverberations around the arena, they sounded like a mumble.
Robin Thicke
I assumed we would hear Blurred Lines and then I'd be bored through the rest. I was surprised. He was entertaining. He commanded the stage, good confidence, good entertainer. One ballad sone on the piano I didn't love, and his commentary about going after your dreams or whatever was a bore, but overall very entertaining. One funny thing he did while singing was grab a fan's iPhone, turn with his back to the crowd, take a selfie, and hand it back.
Fallout Boy
The band is great. The first couple of songs I didn't recognize, nor like, and didn't sound anything like the familiar fallout boy sound. The songs I recognized were great. Lots of energy, very good.
Flo Rida
The star of the night. I'm not much of a Flo Rida fan (at least I wasn't until now), but I hoped this performance was surprise me. He was fantastic. Very talented, very energetic, very entertaining. During a song his bandmate, dressed in a santa suit, carried him on his shoulders throughout the crowd.
Enrique Iglesias
He's a very good singer, although his style was a bit boorish. He later got active and walked into the crowd while singing and actually spent most of the performance standing on the hockey glass partition on the arena side. Overall his sound was great, although the sound people had him very over modulated. Heavy bass during his performance as well.
Paramore
Get this twit off the stage. RRrgh. The band is fantastic, but she is incredibly annoying. She ended her performance with Still Into You, which sounded great.. the only song I liked. Granted, the band jammed, but she's a mismatch.
Austin Mahone
He's considered like a Bieber wannabe, so I was not looking forward to this guy. I assumed a cocky kid. Actually, he was quite good and low key. He played a few songs that had a good melody, and did it well. He had the best dancers of any of the groups. An all-male group that not only danced well, but performed acrobatic gymnastic moves, like handsprings and tucks (flips).
Miley Cyrus
I saw her in concert before in her Hannah Montana days and she was very entertaining. I was expecting more. Her set was short (5 songs, but it seemed shorter). I couldn't get into a couple of her songs. Wrecking Ball was performed great. She wore her skimpy outfit that I can really only describe as her strutting around in what looked like a big white diaper. The look doesn't do it for me.
